Welcome to Agnotology.org

This is a web space and blog for the study,
research, and discussion of and about Ignorance
Who is willing to choose the red pill?

s I research this topic of ‘ignorance’, the field seems to expand in front of me. I see an extensive range of potential subtopics that can be addressed as we go forward. The primary goal for this blog is to encourage you to think about what you don’t know. It isn’t possible to know everything, even if someone else does. There’s just not enough time in the day. Also certainly, there are some things we would like to know that are – with current technology – unknowable. While these knowledge gaps may enter the conversation from time to time, the posts here will be more often driven by concerns about what we don’t know by virtue of someone’s active efforts to keep us ignorant. This might be through withholding information, discrediting legitimate information, spinning information to reduce its impact, funneling it through a filter that dilutes or pollutes it making it appear innocuous or irrelevant, by distraction with bold inaccuracies, or a sleight of hand; a simple: ‘look at THIS – NOT that’.

I hope you will find the entries engaging. Ideally this blog will be a dialog with interested readers, and I encourage you to leave your comments on posts you find of interest.

Our post 2.1 introduced the idea of journalistic responsibility to research and reveal information potentially beneficial to the public. Some of our subsequent entries will offer insights into various topics and stories which were identified as legitimate news stories which did not appear in the mainstream media – this decision to quash these stories has ...

Agnotology 2.1: Narrowing our focus

“We are often unaware of the scope and structure of our ignorance. Ignorance is not just a blank space on a person’s mental map. It has contours and coherence, and for all I know rules of operation as well. So as a corollary to writing about what we know, maybe we should add getting familiar ...

Agnotology 1.1: Definitions

Definitions: The intent of this blog is to address the very important topic of ignorance. When people work to communicate, they often encounter misunderstandings because of a difference in the way that they are using some of their words. This might not be obvious until something makes it clear that they are talking – or ...

“Reports that say that something hasn’t happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known known’s; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don’t know we don’t know. And if one looks throughout the history of our country and other free countries, it is the latter category that tend to be the difficult ones.”
